PYONGYANG (Worthy News) – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un marked the 73rd anniversary of the Korean War armistice by paying tribute at war memorials and cemeteries, accompanied for the first time by his daughter, Ju Ae, in a move that analysts say further underscores her increasingly prominent public role.

According to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim visited military cemeteries, met war veterans, and laid flowers at the graves of first-generation guerrilla fighters while reiterating Pyongyang’s longstanding claim that it achieved a “great victory” in the 1950–1953 Korean War.

The conflict ended with an armistice rather than a formal peace treaty, leaving the Korean Peninsula technically still at war.

North Korean state media images and video showed Ju Ae walking beside her father, standing at the center of ceremonial formations, and greeting elderly veterans, highlighting what observers see as her growing status within the country’s leadership.

South Korea’s Unification Ministry said it was the first time Ju Ae had attended the annual armistice commemorations and her first known visit to the Fatherland Liberation War Martyrs Cemetery and the Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery.

SUCCESSION SPECULATION

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service has assessed, based on what lawmakers described as credible intelligence, that Ju Ae is being positioned as Kim’s likely successor.

Her public appearances have become more frequent in recent years. In March, North Korean media published photographs showing her driving a newly unveiled tank. Earlier images showed her firing a rifle at a shooting range and handling a handgun during military inspections.

Kim also visited the Chinese People’s Volunteers cemetery, where he paid respects at the grave of Mao Anying, the son of former Chinese leader Mao Zedong, according to KCNA.

The visit was viewed by analysts as another indication of improving ties between Pyongyang and Beijing after a period of cooler relations.

China entered the Korean War in late 1950 by sending hundreds of thousands of troops to support North Korea, helping prevent the collapse of Kim Il Sung’s regime and shaping the peninsula’s modern history.

HUMAN RIGHTS CONCERNS

The latest commemorations come as North Korea continues to deepen military cooperation with Russia while maintaining close strategic ties with China amid heightened tensions with the United States, South Korea, and their allies.

Human rights advocates say the tightly choreographed commemorations contrast sharply with conditions inside North Korea, where Christians and others accused of criticizing the ruling Kim family face severe punishment.

According to religious freedom groups, many believers worship in secret to avoid arrest, imprisonment, torture, or execution.

North Korea has consistently ranked No. 1 on the Open Doors World Watch List of the countries where Christians face the most severe persecution.

Open Doors estimates that 50,000 to 70,000 Christians are detained in prisons and forced labor camps, where they face brutal conditions, while anyone discovered practicing Christianity outside strict state control risks imprisonment, torture, or death. Under the regime’s policy of collective punishment, entire families can also be imprisoned because of the faith of a single relative.
