Miriam Ibrahim Finally Leaves Sudan, Arrives in Italy

ROME (Worthy News)– A Sudanese woman who was spared a death sentence under sharia for leaving Islam was flown to Italy with her family after spending more than a month in the U.S. embassy in Khartoum, according to the BBC.

Meriam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag and her family were met at Rome’s Ciampino airport by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

Despite possessing South Sudanese travel documents, Ibrahim was arrested last month at the Khartoum airport by Sudanese officials who claimed that her papers were forged; she was not allowed to leave the country and was released into the custody of the U.S. embassy.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Ibrahim was finally able to leave Sudan after lengthy diplomatic negotiations on her behalf by both the Italian government and the Vatican.
