Displaced Nigerians Creates Crisis

By Joseph DeCaro, Worthy News Correspondent

YOLA (Worthy News)– More than 1.6 million Nigerians who were forced to abandon their homes by the belligerence of Boko Haram are creating a humanitarian crisis in Africa’s most populous nation, according to Yahoo News.

Thousands of people are now living in empty fields, construction sites and improvised settlements in Yola, the capital of Nigeria’s Adamawa State.

A lack of sanitation coupled with the nearly 10,000 people presently occupying the Damare camp is creating a breeding ground for disease, according to Sylvanus Papka, a key health official.

Papka said outbreaks of diarrhea and measles are now manageable thanks to a health clinic on site, but the ongoing arrivals of thousands of refugees makes a bad situation much worse.

“There are more than 10,000 displaced people from Mubi who are currently trapped in Cameroon republic and we are expecting them at any time in the camp,” Papka said.
