(Worthy News) – Seven Christians in India’s Madhya Pradesh state have been sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment following accusations that they used a child’s birthday party to conduct unlawful religious conversions.

The men—Amit Kumar, Chhot Singh Dhurve, Jeet Singh Dhurve, Karan Singh Maravi, Pramod Singh, Sanjay Markam and Santosh Paraste—were also fined 100,000 rupees each. The June 12 ruling followed their April 2024 arrests in Dindori district.

According to accounts from Christian advocacy groups, a crowd of Hindu nationalists surrounded the home of Suday Singh Maravi while relatives and friends celebrated his 5-year-old daughter’s birthday. Maravi called police seeking protection, but officers arrested the seven Christians after a neighbor accused them of offering money to induce conversions.

Maravi maintained that the defendants were invited guests and that no conversion ceremony occurred. The court nevertheless convicted the men under the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act.

The consequences extend well beyond the prison walls. The men reportedly served Christian congregations in six villages, leaving those fellowships without pastoral leadership. Their wives and children have also lost their primary providers while an appeal proceeds.

Laws Under Growing Scrutiny

India’s Constitution guarantees freedom of conscience and the right to profess, practice and propagate religion. Yet 12 of the country’s 28 states maintained anti-conversion laws as of 2026, according to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom.

These laws formally prohibit conversion through force, fraud or inducement. Critics contend that vague terms and reversed burdens of proof make ordinary Christian activities—including prayer meetings, charitable assistance and private gatherings—vulnerable to criminal allegations. Madhya Pradesh’s current law places responsibility on the accused to demonstrate that a conversion was lawful.

The case comes amid mounting hostility. The United Christian Forum documented 706 incidents involving Christians from January through November 2025. Open Doors ranked India 12th on its 2026 World Watch List of countries where Christians face the most severe persecution.

Revival Amid Resistance

Christian leaders have reported significant growth in independent congregations, house churches and indigenous ministries during the past 25 years. Reliable nationwide measurements remain difficult, however, particularly because India’s latest completed census is from 2011.

India also remains at the heart of the missions region known as the 10/40 Window, stretching across North Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Joshua Project estimates that more than 2,000 of India’s people groups—representing roughly 1.39 billion people—remain unreached, meaning they have too few Christians and churches to evangelize their communities without outside assistance.

Against that enormous need, the imprisonment of seven believers after a family celebration carries a sobering message: Even as the Gospel takes root in quiet places, those who gather in Christ’s name may pay a heavy price.
