ACLJ: Nation at “Cultural Crossroads” On National Day of Prayer

May 4, 2001

(Washington, DC) – The American Center for Law and Justice, an international public interest law firm, said today the country is standing at a “cultural crossroads” on this National Day of Prayer as religious expression – including prayer – is under attack by groups like the American Civil Liberties Union.

“This is a critical time for our nation,” said Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the ACLJ who is attending National Day of Prayer events in Washington D.C. today. “As a nation, we are standing at a cultural crossroads as organizations like the ACLU work hard to strip our country of its religious heritage and freedoms. As our country marks the National Day of Prayer, we must never forget the constitutional guarantees permitting the free expression and exercise of religion – a cornerstone of our freedoms. We remain committed to defending the constitutional rights of people of faith to express their beliefs freely and publicly. We will continue to aggressively counter the efforts of the ACLU and other organizations.”

The ACLJ is working on a variety of cases defending religious expression – battling the ACLU to keep Ten Commandment displays in place in communities across the country – as well as defending the First Amendment rights of people of faith in the workplace, in school, and in the public arena.
