(Worthy News) – The Pentagon has ordered 30 American colleges and universities to audit foreign research partnerships and cut off any arrangements deemed a threat to U.S. national security, with officials warning that schools could lose federal research funding if they fail to comply.

According to The Washington Times, the directive is part of a broader effort to tighten security around taxpayer-funded research and prevent adversarial nations, particularly China, from exploiting sensitive technology. The schools reportedly include Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Johns Hopkins University.

The Defense Department order gives universities a short window to review relationships with foreign institutions identified as security risks. The Pentagon has cited concerns that federally funded research and development could be misappropriated through partnerships with institutions tied to China, Russia, and Iran.

The move follows a Pentagon list of 130 foreign academic and research entities that officials say raise the risk of U.S.-funded research being diverted for foreign military or strategic use. Eighty-eight of those institutions are located in mainland China, according to reporting on the directive.

Pentagon officials said the policy aims to protect American innovation, national defense research, and the integrity of federal grants. Critics in higher education, however, warned that the order could cast suspicion on universities without publicly presenting evidence of wrongdoing.

The crackdown comes as Washington continues to confront Beijing over technology theft, military modernization, artificial intelligence, and influence operations inside U.S. institutions. Lawmakers have increasingly argued that America’s open research environment must not become a back door for adversaries seeking access to sensitive defense-related breakthroughs.
