Egyptian court rules it’s illegal to demolish churches

(Worthy News) – A court in Alexandria has blocked the demolition of a church, thereby setting a landmark legal precedent for every city in Egypt.
According to Barnabas Aid, the recent ruling reflects the latest Egyptian constitution that was introduced one year after the overthrow of President Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood government in 2013. Although the new constitution is still rooted in Islamic law, Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court has ruled that since mosques and churches are both houses of worship, the demolition of either building is now prohibited.
Until recently, Egyptian Christians needed permission from no less an authority than the nation’s president to just repair a church. And many of Egypt’s churches were damaged or destroyed by Islamist mobs after Morsi was removed from office.
