Pompeo rolls out new sanctions on Iran for protest deaths

(Worthy News) – American Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Thursday a new wave of sanctions against Iran for its harsh repression of protests that began on November 15 over austerity fuel prices.

Iranian officials who detained protestors on behalf of the regime would be hindered in their ability to get visas, Pompeo said in a State Department-hosted panel discussion in Washington.

The abuses punished by American sanctions also included women arrested for not wearing a face-covering, religious minorities banned from working with Muslim children in childcare, and eleven imprisoned journalists whose family members have suffered “a campaign of intimidation,” according to Pompeo.

Protests in Iran began November 15 and saw 304 deaths from the strongman tactics of the government that followed, Amnesty International said.
