Huge leap in number of protestors killed in Iran last month

(Worthy News) – The US has confirmed the highest estimate yet for the number of protestors killed in Iranian demonstrations that began November 15, agreeing with Reuters’ estimate that 1,500 people were killed.

Reuters said that the slain included “at least 17 teenagers and about 400 women” in the brutal suppression that followed a 50 to 300% austerity spike in fuel prices.

The figures, a significant jump from Amnesty International’s original estimate of 304 casualties, “underscore…the urgency for the international community to punish the perpetrators and isolate the regime,” U.S. Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook said Monday.

On December 16 Amnesty’s Middle East researcher Philip Luther said his organization was considering raising its own estimate based on “credible” reports that Iranian security opened fire on protestors.
