Likud challenger seeking to depose Netanyahu could mean a boost for Israeli conservatives

(Worthy News) – Likud member Gideon Sa’ar is challenging embattled Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for Israel’s conservative leadership primary on December 26 in what analysts say could mean a turn of the tide for the party.
Netanyahu, who is facing charges for bribing media outlets for favorable coverage that he calls politically motivated “selective enforcement,” was first challenged by Sa’ar in November when the 53-year-old called for primaries.
“Whereas for many years, it was [Mr. Netanyahu] who brought the Likud to power, it now appears that he is also the one today holding them from power,” Israel-based Middle East analyst Arsen Ostrovsky said.
The former cabinet minister for Ariel Sharon’s Likud government said “the writing is on the wall” for Netanyahu, even though so far he only holds public support from 5 of Likud’s 32 sitting Knesset members.
