“Apocalypse” descends on southeast Australia as wildfires forces thousands to flee

(Worthy News) – Scenes reminiscent of the “apocalypse” settled over southeastern Australia Tuesday, as brushfires had forced thousands to flee to beaches and burned down whole towns.

Fires that began Sunday in the town of Mallacoota in Victoria state 310 miles east of Melbourne had by Tuesday killed 7 people and displaced over 5,000, terrifying residents with alternating pitch-black and blood-red skies in the daytime.

“It’s just absolute devastation,” local resident Maisy told 3AW Melbourne.

“This is really scary now, it’s just red, everywhere,” local Jann Gilbert added on Facebook.

One volunteer firefighter claimed his firetruck had been flipped by a roving “fire tornado.”

Two hundred fires continued to rage Tuesday across the southeast Australian states of New South Wales and Victoria as December 31st culminated the hottest decade on record in country’s history.
