Possible marketplace from the time of Jesus discovered near Pilgrimage Road

(Worthy News) – More evidence of a bustling marketplace was discovered in Jerusalem near the Pilgrimage Road that led to the Second Temple in Jesus’ time, rounding out the picture of an artery that connected to places like the Pool of Siloam.

A large paved area was discovered by the Israel Antiquities Authority Monday near the recently discovered thoroughfare on the way to the current Temple Mount, as well as a 2,000-year-old measuring table used for substances like wine and olive oil in the City of David National Park.

“The volume standard table we’ve found, as well as the stone weights discovered nearby, support the theory that this was the site of vast trade activity, and perhaps this may indicate the existence of a market,” archaeologist Ari Levi said.

Researchers also believe the area was the quarter where the “Argoranomos,” or officer in charge of standardizing weights and measures, lived.
