US General warns about rapid spread of ISIS in Africa

by Jordan Hilger, Worthy News Correspondent

(Worthy News) – A US General has warned that US counter-terrorism efforts and the efforts of national governments in Africa are not curtailing the spread of the Islamic State and al-Qaeda there, and that a new caliphate may soon be established.

U.S. intelligence officials have noted an increased willingness for cooperation between al-Qaeda and ISIS affiliates in Africa, with many of the terrorists even marrying into local tribes, facilitating the spread of Islamism.

“Western and international and African efforts there are not getting the job done,” commander of U.S. Africa Command Gen. Stephen Townsend explained to lawmakers Tuesday. “ISIS and al-Qaeda are on the march…If ISIS can carve out a new caliphate, or Al-Qaeda can, they will do it.”

The Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART) estimates that Boko Haram, the West African ISIS, and other Islamists have killed 6,000 Christians in Nigeria alone since 2015, and displaced 2.5 million people in that country.
