Increased sales of the Bible during coronavirus pandemic

(Worthy News) – Major Christian publishing companies have reported increased sales of the Bible during the coronavirus pandemic. The increase is reportedly similar to that observed after the September 11 terror attacks in 2001.

The Christian Post reports that Tyndale House, a publishing firm based in Illinois, said their Bible sales for March 2020 were considerably higher than they were for the same time last year. Speaking to the Post on Tuesday, Tyndale executive Jim Jewell said: “It’s not surprising that people turn to the comfort and clarity of the Bible in times of trouble and uncertainty.”

Jewell confirmed there had also been an increase in Bible sales in the month following the 9/11 attacks when “Tyndale Bible sales were 57% higher than October of 2000.”

The Alabaster Co. of California recorded a 143% rise in Bible sales compared to last year, the Post reports. In an interview with Fox News, Alabaster co-founder Brian Chung said he believed “people are buying Bibles because there’s a longing to connect with God, find meaning, and experience peace.”

LifeWay Christian resources also reported an increase of 62% in Bible sales last week, compared to the same time last year. LifeWay CEO Ben Mandrell told Fox:  “We believe this is no accident, as people often go to the Bible as a source of hope in times of crisis and uncertainty. People draw hope from Scripture because in it they see a God who is with us during our suffering.”
