(Worthy News) – Nearly nine out of every 10 Americans fear the imminent collapse of the U.S. economy during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new poll. The Axios-Ipsos CoronavirusIndex also showed that Americans fear the possible financial ruin of their nation more than the risk of reopening communities too early amid the virus outbreak.

Asked about the U.S. economy collapsing, 87 percent of respondents said they were somewhat, very, or extremely concerned. Just 74 percent of interviewed Americans said that they were somewhat, very, or extremely concerned about their community reopening too soon amid the ongoing pandemic.

“When you force one question over the other, health is still more important, over the economy,” stressed Cliff Young, the Ipsos U.S. public affairs president. “But that’s going to start changing,” he warned in published remarks.

Pollsters surveyed on behalf of news service Axios and research company Ipsos 1,021 random adults across the United States from April 24–27 to get the latest data. “The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3.4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level,” Ipsos explained.

The respondents expressed worries about the economy amid growing pressure on states to reopen after weeks of lockdowns linked to the coronavirus outbreak. Last week it was revealed that U.S. unemployment is nearing levels of the Great Depression of the 1930s.

At least one in six Americans of working age is out of a job as the coronavirus pandemic essentially shut down the economy, according to government figures.
