(Worthy News) – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Sunday that American officials are endangering world peace by attempting to push the US and China “to the brink of a new cold war,” Time reports. Amid rising tensions between the two countries on a range of issues, including China’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak, last week the US Senate unanimously passed a bill that could prevent some Chinese companies from being listed on American stock exchanges.

Tensions were further increased last week when China announced new legislation in Hong Kong that would criminalize the strongest critics of the Chinese regime: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called the planned legislation a “disastrous proposal.” Speaking at an annual news briefing to National People’s Congress meetings in Beijing on Sunday, Wang Yi said what China did in Hong Kong was an internal issue and the principle of non-interference must be upheld by all nations, Time reported.

Moreover, Wang said the US should not “challenge China’s red line” on Taiwan. In a move that angered Beijing last week, the Trump administration told Congress Wednesday of plans to sell $180 million worth of torpedoes to Taiwan. “Reunification between the two sides of the Strait is an inevitable trend of history, no one and no force can stop it,” Wang said. Beijing considers Taiwan to be a province of China.

Wang added: “China has no intention to change the US, nor to replace the US. It is also wishful thinking for the US to change China.”

Wang Yi also took the opportunity to criticize the US for its handling of nuclear negotiations with North Korea, Time reported. “We have seen some positive steps taken by the DPRK in the last few years towards de-escalation and denuclearization,” Wang said. “Regrettably, these steps have not been reciprocated in a substantive way by the U.S. side. This is the main reason for the ongoing stalemate in the DPRK-U.S. dialogue.”
