(Worthy News) – The Gospel is being spread in difficult-to-reach former Soviet Union countries, Mission Network News reported Wednesday. Local Christians have been reaching out to share the Gospel and offer practical help to neighbors struggling with poverty during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Gospel is being spread even in the mainly Muslim region of Southern Russia: Eric Mock of the Slavic Gospel Association told MMN about a specific case of three young girls who were taken in by a Christian neighbor when their mother went to prison.

“How amazing that the neighbor took the kids in and that, in the midst of all this hardship, that was the mechanism that God used to open the door for the Gospel to be presented,” Mock said.

Describing the work of a pastor in Belarus, Mock told how Christian ministry has impacted orphaned children in the small landlocked country. “The missionary pastor had gone over to visit this orphan boy that he knew,” Mock said. “The boy was sitting there; he didn’t know how to make his own dinner, any way to really care for himself. [The pastor] came over and bought food, but he [also] sat down and showed him how to make chicken soup.” The pastor has reportedly been able to build a relationship with the boy and continue ministering to him.

In Georgia, meanwhile, a local church has been providing groceries for a retired doctor who only had $23 to live on each month. “She was blown away that she was provided those basic needs. Before, she had not really heard anything of the Gospel, but now she has heard the Gospel,” Mock said.
