(Worthy News) – Russia’s Ministry of Defense has announced it is deploying additional troops to the nation’s eastern border with China because it says there are rising tensions in the wider Asia-Pacific region, the Epoch Times reports. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu made the announcement on the ministry website on Thursday, but did not specify the nature of the new threats or where the additional troops would be stationed.

In his website statement, Shoigu also said 500 pieces of modernized equipment would be made available for the region, as well upgrades to the navy’s Northern Fleet, the Epoch Times reported.

Referring to the increasing risk of a naval conflict between the US and China, analyst Alexander Gabuev, from Moscow’s Carnegie Center, said Russia is making sure it has an adequate military presence in an area where conflicts could spillover, the Epoch Times reported.

“Russia cannot be left defenseless and it also needs to operate its capabilities there, in terms of air force, defense, and personnel,” Gabuev said.

While he did not mention a particular country or conflict, the Epoch Times reports, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia’s was concerned about the actions of nations from outside the region: “All of these, of course, do not contribute to stability in this region.”
