(Worthy News) –
A new survey has found that 44 percent of Christians believe the Bible is “ambiguous” on the subject of abortion, Christian Headlines reports. The Cultural Research Center (CRC) of Arizona Christian University conducted the survey in January, polling a nationally representative sample of 2,000 adult professing Christians. The results were published in the eleventh report of the annual American Worldview Inventory (AWI) 2020.

The CRC survey showed that while 44 percent of professing Christians believe the Bible “is ambiguous in its teaching about abortion,” 34 percent believe “abortion is morally acceptable if it spares the mother from financial or emotional discomfort or hardship.” When asked if they believe “human life is sacred,” 40 percent of respondents said no.

The poll also showed that 42 percent of respondents “seek moral guidance primarily from sources other than the Bible.” Forty-three percent said they do not believe God has a purpose for humanity in devoting one’s life to Him.

In regard to marriage, 34 percent of respondents “reject the idea of legitimate marriage as one man and one woman.”

The author of the survey, CRC Director of Research Dr. George Barna, said American Christians are undergoing a fundamental change in their world views. “The irony of the reshaping of the spiritual landscape in America is that it represents a post-Christian Reformation driven by people seeking to retain a Christian identity,” Barna said in a statement. “Unfortunately, the theology of this reformation is being driven by American culture rather than biblical truth,” Barna said.
