Ayatollah security forces reportedly attack protestors in Iran

Free Iran news editor M. Hanif Jazayeri has tweeted that security forces sent by Ayatollah Khamenei were attacking civilians protesting against the Islamic regime in Tehran Thursday night.

Chanting against the dictatorship, protestors had gathered outside Tehran’s Jam hospital, where beloved celebrity singer and fellow protestor Mohammad Reza Shajarian had just died.

Well-known and popular in Iran, Shajarian’s traditional Persian music was frequently heard on state radio until the singer publicly backed those who challenged the reelection of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2009: in protest against Islamic fundamentalist regime, Shajarian told Iran state radio to stop playing his songs. After a long battle with cancer, Shajarian died Thursday at age 80, BBC News reports.

As mourners and protestors gathered outside the hospital, some crying, Jazayeri tweeted: “Khamenei’s forces are attacking people at #IranProtests in Tehran tonight.” In a further tweet Jazayeri added: “MEK [anti-regime political militant group] activists at the scene say security forces attacked and detained people who gathered in memory of Iran’s iconic singer Shajarian.”

Posting video footage of the protest itself, Jazayeri said protestors were chanting “Our state TV and radio is a disgrace” and added: “‘Death to the dictator’ can be clearly heard.”
