Israel strikes targets in Syria to send a message to Iran

(Worthy News) – Israel carried out a round of airstrikes in Syria early Wednesday morning in what military officials said was a message to Iran to get out of the country, the Times of Israel reports. The strikes followed a thwarted Iran-backed attempt to set off anti-personnel mines against Israeli troops on the Golan Heights this week.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Hidai Zilberman confirmed in a statement that Israeli fighter jets struck eight targets in Syria before dawn on Wednesday. Some of the targets were close to Damascus and some were along the Golan border.

The targets bombed were facilities controlled by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ expeditionary Quds Force which commandeers proxy militias in Syria, the Times of Israel said. A Syrian military base and a number of Syrian anti-aircraft batteries were also struck. According to the Syrian state news agency SANA, three soldiers were killed and one was injured in the strikes. There IRGC did not report any casualties, the Times of Israel said.

The Iranian regime continually, publicly, expresses it wants to see the destruction of Israel, which it describes as a “Zionist imposter.” Israel, therefore, sees a build-up of Iran’s presence in next-door Syria as intolerable.

In a statement about Wednesday’s strikes, Defense Minister Benny Gantz said: “The IDF last night struck military targets belonging to the Iranian Quds Force and the Syrian military in response to the planting of bombs on the Syrian border within Israeli territory. I say again to our enemies: Israel will not accept violations of our sovereignty anywhere, and we will not allow a dangerous force build-up on any border.”
