(Worthy News) – Authorities in Utah have discovered an unexplained metal monolith installed in the ground in a remote red rock area of the state, The Hill reports. The Utah Department of Public Safety (UDPS) stated Monday that the discovery was made during a count of bighorn sheep in a southeastern part of the state on November 18.

Crew members from the UDPS Aero Bureau were working with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources when an “unusual object” was seen from the air. It was found to be a metal monolith, estimated to be some 10 to 12 feet high. The object offers no explanation as to who installed it or why they did, The Hill said.

In their statement Monday, Utah authorities said they would not reveal the location of the object because “it is in a very remote area and if individuals were to attempt to visit the area, there is a significant possibility they may become stranded and require rescue.” However, videos of workers finding the monolith were shared.

The first to spot the monolith from his plane, pilot Bret Hutchings later told the KSL media outlet about his crew’s reaction: “We were kind of joking around that if one of us suddenly disappears, then the rest of us make a run for it. I’m assuming it’s some new wave artist or something or, you know, somebody that was a big (‘2001: A Space Odyssey’) fan.”

Utah authorities also made jokes, explaining that it is illegal to install structures “without authorization on federally managed public lands, no matter what planet you’re from.” The Bureau of Land Management will decide whether additional investigation is necessary.
