China calls on new US administration to quickly re-join Iran deal

(Worthy News) – The Chinese government has called on the new US administration to re-join the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) Iran nuclear deal as soon as possible, Jerusalem Online reports. The Trump administration took the US out of the international deal in 2018.
Speaking a press briefing on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said he hopes the new US administration will return to the Iran deal “as soon as possible and unconditionally,” Jerusalem Online reports.
Zhao said that in re-entering the agreement, the US should “lift all relevant sanctions, take concrete actions to fulfill its duties, and advance the process of political settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue and safeguard regional peace and stability,” Jerusalem Online said.
The foreign minister’s remarks were made after Jake Sullivan, US President-elect Joe Biden’s nominee for national security adviser, said Monday that the new administration plans to put Iran “back into the box” by re-entering the JCPOA and forcing the Iranian regime to comply with the agreed terms, Jerusalem Online reported. Sullivan added that after the US return to the deal, there would be “follow-on negotiation” with Iran on other issues too.
Following its withdrawal from the Iran deal in 2018, the US returned to applying unilateral sanctions that had been lifted as part of the agreement.
