Syria claims “enemy” Israel conducted airstrikes near Damascus

Syrian media outlets have said Israel carried out a number of targeted airstrikes around Damascus late Wednesday night, the Times of Israel reports. Following standard policy about commenting on operations in Syria, Israel has neither confirmed nor denied the reports.

The strikes targeted sites in the el-Kisweh area, south of Damascus, and around the town of al-Dimas to the west of the city, Syrian media said. Both these areas have hosted operational bases for Iran-backed militias and for Iranian forces, the Times of Israel said. Israel has reportedly targeted both areas before.

Citing a military source in a statement about the strikes, the Syrian media outlet SANA said: “The Israeli enemy carried out an air attack by means of a barrage of missiles from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan on some targets in the southern region.”

The strikes reportedly began just after 11 pm on Wednesday, two days after a delegation from the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps delegation is understood to have visited Syria, the Times of Israel said.

The airstrikes came two days after an Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps delegation reportedly visited the country. In response, the Syrian military fired numerous surface-to-air missiles and other weapons into the sky, the Times of Israel reports.
