(Worthy News) – As the violent conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip continues to have no resolution, Israel has developed a high-tech semi-autonomous “military robot” that could be used instead of IDF soldiers to patrol its border with Gaza, Eursasian Times reports. Known as ‘Jaguar,’ the “robot” is an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) that will be able to identify and destroy enemy targets remotely.

Developed jointly by the Israel Aerospace Industries’ Elta systems and the technological department of the IDF’s Ground Forces Command, the ‘Jaguar’ system is equipped with anti-tank 7.62 mm MAG machine guns, high-resolution cameras, state-of-the-art communication transmitters, powerful headlights, and a remote-controlled PA system for operational purposes, Eurasian Times reports.

“The combat UGV travels autonomously, detects and bypasses obstacles, avoids collisions and trampling, calculates a route for itself, and detects its surroundings by dozens of sensitive sensors,” the IDF said in a statement. However, the command and firing will be carried out manually, upon the order of humans.

“We have led a groundbreaking technological development – an independent robot that reduces the combat soldier’s friction with the enemy and prevents risks to human life,” Lt.-Col. Nathan Kuperstein, Head of Autonomy and Robotics at the IDF’s Land Technology Division said in a statement. “It even knows how to charge itself – almost like an iRobot.”

The UGV is currently being integrated into the Gaza division, the Jerusalem Post reports. “The Jaguar is one of the most innovative ground robots of the ‘smart and deadly’ border project in the northern division of the Gaza Strip,” the IDF said.
