(Worthy News) – U.S. President Joe Biden has condemned a “terrorist attack” against Iraq’s Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi and said his administration would help find those responsible.

Kadhemi escaped unhurt when an explosives-packed drone struck his Baghdad residence early Sunday. “I strongly condemn the terrorist attack targeting the residence of Iraqi Prime Minister al-Kadhemi,” Biden added in published remarks.

“I am relieved the Prime Minister was not injured and commend the leadership he has shown in calling for calm, restraint, and dialogue to protect the institutions of the state. And strengthen the democracy Iraqis so richly deserve,” the president wrote in a statement.

Biden said he had instructed his national security team to offer appropriate assistance to Iraqi authorities as they investigate.

The attack was seen as a substantial escalation in the country’s post-election turmoil. And, the prime minister’s office described the attack as a “failed assassination attempt.”

Iraqi President Barham Salih called the strike, which was not immediately claimed by any group, an attempted “coup against the constitutional system.”

UNDERMINING DEMOCRACY

Biden said that “the perpetrators of this terrorist attack on the Iraqi state must be held accountable,” as he condemned “in the strongest terms those using violence to undermine Iraq’s democratic process.”

It comes after Biden and the Iraqi prime minister, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, sealed an agreement this year, formally ending the US combat mission in Iraq by the end of 2021.

Coupled with Biden’s recent chaotic withdrawal of the last U.S. forces in Afghanistan, the Democratic president says he is ending two wars that George W. Bush began.

However, critics have expressed concern that Islamic extremists and other regional powers will step in to create instability in the crucial
region. That was due to add to concern among minorities, including Christians.

Hundreds of thousands of Christians have fled Iraq in recent years, with many facing hardships in refugee camps and other hiding places.
