(Worthy News) – The Hezbollah terrorist organization and its allies lost their majority in Lebanon’s parliament following a general election held Sunday amid the country’s devastating economic crisis, the Associated Press reports.

The election results finalized on Tuesday have been interpreted as an indictment against a ruling political and militant class which has aligned itself with Iran and which has done almost nothing to alleviate chronic and crushing poverty in the country.

An arch-enemy of Israel, the Iran-backed Hezbollah group and its coalition won 61 seats in Lebanon’s 128-member parliament – ten seats fewer than it obtained in the last election in 2018, AP said.

The nationalist Christian Lebanese Forces were the biggest winner, with a dozen independent newcomers also winning seats, AP reports.

The results represent a country that is exhausted by a corrupt ruling political class that has been in power for decades and allows many of its citizens to go without even basic necessities such as medicine and electricity.

“The results show that the Lebanese mood is against this ruling class and is also against the political alignment with Iran,” Lebanese Forces official Wissam Raji told AP.

“The Lebanese know that the situation has become disastrous and the solution is not in the hands of the ruling class. The solution lies in radical change in the political map of Lebanon at all levels.”
