(Worthy News) – The U.S. embassy has reopened in Kyiv, despite the ongoing Russian invasion outside the Ukrainian capital.

“The Ukrainian people, with our security assistance, have defended their homeland in the face of Russia’s unconscionable invasion,” said U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

“As a result, the Stars and Stripes are flying over the Embassy once again,” he added in a statement on Wednesday.

While fighting continued Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed decrees to extend martial law and mobilization for another 90 days in the war-torn nation.

The proposals, starting from May 25, need to be approved by the Ukrainian lawmakers.

But it wasn’t immediately clear whether safety concerns could prevent the vote.

Among other measures, the EU says it plans to spend up to 300 billion euros to end its reliance on Russian natural gas and oil imports by 2027.

The bloc, which gets 40 percent of its energy needs from Russia, will source energy supplies from other countries and boost renewables, authorities said.
