JERUSALEM (Worthy News) – At least nearly one-third of Palestinians who died in the latest fighting between Israel and Gaza Strip militants died due to errant rockets fired by the Palestinian side, Israel’s military says.

The Israeli military estimated that of the 47 Palestinians killed in the weekend clashes, — at least 14 died because of Islamic Jihad-fired rockets falling short.

The assessment, confirmed by accounts of independent reporters, came as Israel had come under international pressure over deadly air strikes.

Israel said it responded to some 600 Palestinian rockets and mortars fired at Israel since Friday forcing thousands to seek shelter.

On Sunday, Palestinian rockets fired from the Gaza Strip even reached Jerusalem for the first time since the 2021 conflict.

The Israeli military also managed to kill a second top militant from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group as part of an operation – codenamed Breaking Dawn.

Six children and several militants- including leaders Khaled Mansour and Tayseer Jabari – were among the scores of Palestinians reported having died over the weekend.

Observers see the latest violence as the most severe flare-up between Israel and Gaza since an 11-day conflict in May 2021 left over 200 Palestinians and a dozen Israelis dead.

And the clashes underscored ongoing tensions over Gaza, bordering Egypt on the southwest and Israel on the east and the West Bank, which are claimed as part of a State of Palestine.
