US House Committee Subpoenas Ex-President Trump

WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – The U.S. House committee is investigating the deadly January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., issued a subpoena on Friday to former President Donald J. Trump.

The panel claims Trump used the unrest to overturn the 2020 elections, charges he vehemently denies. Friday’s subpoena is the committee’s most aggressive step yet.

Commentators say the move could lead to a potentially historic court battle over whether an ex-president can be forced to answer questions from a legislative panel investigating matters related to an ongoing criminal investigation.

“As demonstrated in our hearings, we have assembled overwhelming evidence, including from dozens of your former appointees and staff, that you personally orchestrated and oversaw a multi-part effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election and to obstruct the peaceful transition of power,” the committee wrote in a letter to Trump on Friday.

However, Trump has called the panel the “unselect committee” and accused it of waging an unfair political witch-hunt on him. He was not likely to cooperate with the subpoena.

Critics claim he could try to run out the clock on a committee whose mandate will likely end early next year if Republicans win a majority in the House in November’s midterm elections.

Thousands of rioters claiming to be Trump supporters attacked the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

They stormed the complex after Trump delivered a fiery speech at a rally near the White House in which he linked his defeat in the 2020 presidential election to elected fraud.

Current President Joe Biden, a Democrat, has condemned Trump for not recognizing the elections.
