(Worthy News) – President Biden said Monday that, following last week’s midterm elections, he does not believe Democrats will have enough votes in Congress to codify Roe v Wade and create federal rights to abortion, Axios reports. Sending the issue of abortion back to individual states for consideration, the US Supreme Court reversed Roe through its June 24 ruling in the case of Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

Biden had promised in June that, if he had the 60 votes necessary to pass the threshold, he would be willing to amend the Senate’s filibuster rules for the sake of codifying Roe, Axios reported.

Addressing a press conference in Bali, Indonesia, on Monday, Biden said he did not expect his Democratic party to have quite enough seats once all the midterm election results were in.

“I don’t think they can expect much of anything other than we’ll maintain our positions… I don’t think there’s enough votes to codify unless something happens unusual in the House. I think we’re going to get very close in the House, but I don’t– I think it’s going to be very close, but I don’t think we’re going to make it,” Biden said.

According to an exit poll by Edison Research, abortion and inflation were top issues driving US voters to the polls in Tuesday’s midterms last week, Reuters reports.
