(Worthy News) – Electricians in Ukraine are scrambling to restore power to civilians struggling amid freezing conditions after Russia launched a fresh wave of missile strikes against essential Ukrainian infrastructure on December 5, Reuters reported Tuesday.

According to Ukraine’s General Staff, the Russian strikes have caused power outages across the country.

Although Ukraine’s capital city Kyiv has not suffered the worst of the bombing, much of the surrounding area that is home to 1.8 million people have no electricity, Reuters said.

“In the coming days, about half of the region will be without electricity,” Governor Oleksiy Kuleba said in a statement on December 5.

Other regions, including the Odessa area and the eastern city of Kramatorsk, suffered damage to water pumping stations and reserve lines, leaving civilians without heat, water, or electricity.

Ukrainian officials are warning the country’s power grid remains vulnerable to ongoing Russian strikes; civilians have been told to prepare for emergency blackouts while efforts are made to repair the damage.

Monday’s strikes took place against a backdrop of intense fighting in the Bakhmut and Avdiyivka areas of Donetsk region, with tank and artillery bombardments hitting around 20 settlements in the area, including Soledar, Verkhnokamyanske, Andriyivka, and Yakovlyivka, Reuters said.
