Scotland: Convicted male rapist may serve time in women’s jail after claims he is transitioning to female

(Worthy News) – A 31 year-old Scottish man convicted yesterday of raping two women may serve his sentence in a women’s prison because he claims that, since being charged with the sex attacks in Glasgow, Scotland, he has become a trans woman, the Daily Mail reports.

Known as Adam Graham at the start of his trial and at the time of the two rapes in 2016 and 2019, Isla Bryson has not had sex-change surgery, the Mail reports. He is currently detained in a segregation unit at Scotland’s Cornton Vale women’s prison awaiting risk assessment as to where he should serve his jail time.

Bryson’s case arises in the context of the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill (GRR), passed by the Scottish parliament last month, with the backing of Labour and the Liberal Democrats as well as the ruling Scottish National Party (SNP), the Daily Mail reports. The Bill would allow anyone over 16 to ‘self-identify’ as the opposite sex with no medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria.

In a press statement yesterday, Scottish Conservative shadow community safety minister Russell Findlay said: “This rapist decided that he was no longer a man only after appearing in court on a rape charge. We now have the utterly perverse situation where a Scottish court refers to someone who says he identifies as female using ‘her penis’ to rape two vulnerable women. We warned of the inevitability of this happening if the SNP’s gender self-ID law passed, but for it to have become reality is deeply worrying and an affront to the victims.”

Following an outpouring of concern for women’s rights, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday blocked the controversial Scottish gender reform bill, the Mail said.
