(Worthy News) – Days after Taiwan’s foreign minister said he believes China may invade Taiwan in 2027, the country’s Ministry of Defense announced that Chinese military aircraft and naval vessels again trespassed into Taiwanese air and space early on Wednesday.

Taiwan is a democratic self-governing island nation that successive authoritarian Chinese governments have threateningly asserted is part of China. Tensions between China and Taiwan are currently very high, with Chinese fighter jets flying close to Taiwanese airspace almost every day, according to a report by Sky News.

Tweeting on its official Twitter page, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense said Wednesday: “4 PLA aircraft and 3 PLAN vessels around Taiwan were detected by 6 a.m.(UTC+8) today. R.O.C. Armed Forces have monitored the situation and tasked CAP aircraft, Navy vessels, and land-based missile systems to respond to these activities.”

In an exclusive interview with Sky News earlier this month, Taiwan’s foreign minister Joseph Wu said he believes China’s President Xi Jinping is “more likely” to invade Taiwan fairly soon in order to divert attention away from his domestic problems. According to Wu, 2027 may well be the year Xi Jinping decides to conduct an invasion. “In 2027, Xi Jinping is likely to go into his fourth term, and if in his previous three terms, he cannot claim any achievement during his office, he might need to think about something else for him to claim as his achievement or his legacy,” Wu said.

“If you look at the Chinese situation right now, the economy is going down. People are not happy; the real estate business seems to be melting down, Wu continued.

“If Xi Jinping cannot change the situation domestically in China, you might want to resort to a use of force or creating a crisis externally to divert domestic attention or to show to the Chinese that he has accomplished something. We are concerned that Taiwan might become his scapegoat.”
