(Worthy News) – Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has announced he will be seeking full membership in the United Nations for the State of Palestine this week, UPI reports. Although recognized by many countries as a state, Palestine is not recognized by Israel and has only non-member Observer status in the United Nations.

Abbas made his announcement during a meeting of the Arab League in Cairo, Egypt, at which he was warned that continued conflict with Israel would wreak further instability in the volatile Middle East region, UPI said. The announcement comes amid heightened tensions in the deadly Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which has raged since 1948.

Abbas said he would ask the United Nations to condemn unilateral Israeli settlement in the West Bank and facilitate a “two-state solution” to end the conflict.

“The PA in the coming days will turn to the UN and its bodies, including the Security Council, to demand a resolution in defense of the two-state solution by granting Palestine full membership in the UN,” Abbas said in a statement to the Arab League.

“Palestine reserves the right and will continue to apply to courts and international organizations to protect the legal rights of our people,” Abbas added.
