United States shoots down Iranian-made drone spying on US base in Syria

(Worthy News) – The United States military on Monday shot down an Iranian-made drone it said was spying on a strategic US army base in northeast Syria, the Times of Israel (TOI) reports.
In a statement, the United States Central Command said the drone was surveilling the Mission Support Site Conoco base, which was set up to help the Syrian Democratic Forces prevent a resurgence of the Islamic State terror group and block Iranian power in the region.
“On February 14th, at approximately 2:30 PM local time, US forces in Syria engaged and shot down an Iranian-manufactured UAV attempting to conduct reconnaissance of Mission Support Site Conoco, a patrol base in northeast Syria,” CENTCOM said in a tweet on Tuesday.
Hours before Monday’s drone was shot down, the US Defense Department described Iranian drones and missiles as among the most serious air defense threats to the United States and its Gulf allies, the Jerusalem Post reports. In a statement, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East, Dana Stroul, said one of the greatest concerns about Iranian drones is their distribution among rogue non-state actors across the Middle East.
World powers are also increasingly concerned about Iran’s supply of “kamikaze” drones to Russia for use in their war against Ukraine, TOI reports.
