US House passes bipartisan law to crack down on Chinese organ harvesting industry

(Worthy News) – On Monday, the US House of Representatives passed overwhelmingly bipartisan legislation to crack down on China’s organ harvesting industry.
Introduced by Republican New Jersey Rep. Chris Smith, Republican Texas Rep. Michael McCaul, Democratic Massachusetts Rep. Bill Keating, and Democratic North Carolina Rep. Kathy Manning, the Stop Forced Organ Harvesting Act of 2023 (H.R. 1154) passed in 412-2 vote.
The Act imposes sanctions on individuals and entities, including up to 20 years imprisonment, fines of up to $1 million, and a ban from buying property or obtaining visas on anyone trying to facilitate forced organ harvesting or trafficking for the removal of organs.
“Specifically, the President must report to Congress a list of persons that facilitate (1) forced organ harvesting or (2) trafficking in persons for organ harvesting. For each person on the list, the President must impose property- and visa-blocking sanctions,” the Act reads.
“Furthermore, the State Department may deny or revoke the passport of an individual who has been convicted of a federal crime of knowingly transferring any human organ for valuable consideration for use in human transplantation if the individual (1) is subject to imprisonment or supervised release resulting from that conviction, and (2) used a passport or crossed an international border when committing that crime,” the Act attests.
