(Worthy News) – The UN Human Rights Council on Tuesday approved a resolution condemning the increasing number of executions being carried out by the Islamic regime in Iran, including in relation to nationwide protests sparked by the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini last year, the Times of Israel (TOI) reports.

According to the Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) organization, the Iranian regime has executed at least 144 people this year alone.

Expressing “deep concern at the reported surge in the number of executions, including of individuals sentenced to death in relation to their alleged involvement in the recent protests,” the resolution passed with 23 of the council’s 47 members voting in favor.

The UN resolution calls on Iran to “take all necessary legislative, administrative and other measures” to ensure no one is executed for “offenses that do not meet the threshold of the most serious crimes,” TOI reports.

Moreover, the resolution attests, Tehran must not carry out executions for alleged offenses committed before the age of 18, and sentences must be handed down only by “courts that are competent, independent and impartial.”

Dismissing the Council’s concerns, Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Ali Bahreini, scorned the resolution as “weaponization of human rights as a foreign policy tool,” TOI reports.
