BELGRADE (Worthy News) – Serbian police say they have detained a 14-year boy who was allegedly involved in killing at least eight students and a security guard at a primary school in Belgrade.

Wednesday’s shooting in Serbia’s capital shocked the Balkan nation, where a national mourning period declared.

While shocked residents watched, undercover and heavily armed police accompanied the alleged teenage shooter to a waiting car.

Named only as KK, he was allegedly responsible for shooting to death at least nine people, nearly all children, at the Vladislav Ribnikar primary school in Belgrade.

The government said another six pupils and a teacher were injured. Officials say the suspect allegedly used his father’s gun for the country’s worst school massacre in recent memory.

Parents here tried to comfort children who will never forget this bloody day. “I was downstairs. We had sports class. I was able to hear the shooting. It was non-stop. Not like one shot at a time,” a girl said. “It was shooting without stopping. I didn’t know what was happening.”

Pupils said he walked into a history class, first shot the teacher, and then turned his weapon on his fellow students. He then called the police and waited to be arrested in the schoolyard, said Belgrade’s Police Chief Veselin Milić.

The motive of the attacker, who was a pupil at the school, was not immediately clear. Serbia’s government said there would be a three-day mourning period across the country, which is still reeling from the Balkan wars of the 1990s.

It came as a setback for Belgrade which had hoped to improve security following past shootings, including the assassination in broad daylight in the capital of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić in 2003.
