KYIV/MOSCOW (Worthy News) – Ukraine’s military claimed Thursday it had success on one of the frontlines in its southeast battle against invading Russian troops, but Moscow played down the reported progress.

In a video President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukrainian said troops had taken the village of Staromaiorske as part of an ongoing counteroffensive.

Ukraine’s military stressed it was “solidifying positions” in the same area east of the city of Zaporizhzhia, home to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, which Russian forces have occupied.

Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted Thursday that Ukraine’s attacks had “significantly” intensified.

However, he told reporters in the Russian city of St. Petersburg that Ukrainian troops had no success: “All counter-offensive attempts were stopped, and the enemy was pushed back with high casualties.”

Hundreds of thousands are believed to have been killed or injured since Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year.

That prompted the West to provide billions of euros in weapons to Ukraine and expand the NATO military alliance, with Norway becoming the latest member and Sweden expected to be next later this year.
