(Worthy News) – Representatives of more than 40 countries gathered at the United Nations in New York on Monday to discuss how to revive the blocked Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, the Jewish News Syndicate (JNS) reports. Dubbed “Peace Day Effort,” the meeting was an initiative of the European Union, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, and the Arab League.

In a tweet announcing and explaining the launch of Monday’s initiative, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell wrote: “The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is deteriorating dangerously. With our initiative, we want to support the path towards a comprehensive peace between Israel and Palestine.”

“Over 40 countries & delegations joined our meeting today, where we agreed to start a process to develop a “peace support package,” Borrell continued.

During the meeting, the participants agreed to set up three senior-level working groups: 1. regional, political, and security; 2. economic, trade, and environment; and 3. humanitarian and cultural, JNS reports. The groups will begin work in one month in Brussels.

In a statement to reporters after the meeting, Borrell said there was a need for a “stronger effort” to achieve a “two-state solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “If everybody was really engaged in supporting this two-state solution, the solution would be there already,” he said. “We have to pass from words to deeds,” Borrell said.
