ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS (Worthy News) – At least three people including a 14-year-old girl have died following twin shootings in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam, authorities said late Thursday.

A gunman opened fire on a flat and then a large hospital in Rotterdam. A 32-year-old man was arrested following the shootings on Thursday afternoon, which began in a house and classroom and then continued in the nearby Erasmus Medical Center (EMC), witnesses said.

Police did not specify how many people had been killed, saying they first wanted to inform families. “As previously mentioned, a 32-year-old Rotterdam resident has been arrested.

He is suspected of involvement in the two violent incidents” around Rotterdam’s Heiman Dullaert Square and the EMC, Rotterdam police said. “We are not assuming there is a second shooter,” Rotterdam police added in a statement on social media monitored by Worthy News.

People who were in the EMC, a massive hospital, when the shootings happened “had to leave with their hands up,” witnesses said.

Later, more extensive parts of the hospital were evacuated. Hundreds of people – including patients in wheelchairs – had to take a seat behind a ribbon before they were taken care of elsewhere, Worthy News learned.

After two shootings, the suspect was detained beneath the helicopter site of the EMC, officials said.

It wasn’t immediately clear what the suspected gunman’s motives were, but like other European Union nations, the Netherlands has been alert for possible terror attacks.
