(Worthy News) – After an extended consultation period and deep divisions and disagreements, the Church of England is set to make its controversial Prayers of Love and Faith for the blessing of same-sex couples available for use starting this Sunday, 17 Dec. 2023, Christian Today reports.

CofE doctrine still holds that marriage is between one man and one woman, and gay couples may not be married in church. The denomination’s clergy may use the prayers if they wish to, but they are not obliged to bless same-sex couples.

Emphatically opposed by evangelicals, the House of Bishops approved the use of the Prayers of Love and Faith on Monday, CT said. Eleven bishops have publicly dissented from approving the prayers.

“The Prayers of Love and Faith are offered as resources in praying with and for a same-sex couple who love one another and who wish to give thanks for and mark that love in faith before God,” the introduction to the prayers reads.

“To celebrate in God’s presence the commitment two people have made to each other is an occasion for rejoicing. The texts are offered to express thanksgiving and hope, with prayer that those who are dedicating their life together to God may grow in faith, love, and service as God’s blessing rests upon them.”

In light of dissent concerning the approval of the prayers, the House of Bishops has said it will consider a provision for those who are against offering the prayers, CT reports.

“It is intended that there will be a wide process of consultation regarding the provision to ensure that whatever is agreed serves to promote unity and has broad support across the Church,” the CofE said in a statement.
