AMMAN/WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – U.S. President Joe Biden confirmed Sunday that three American service members were killed and “many wounded” in an unmanned aerial drone attack by Iran-backed groups on U.S. forces stationed in north-eastern Jordan.

“Many” service members were also wounded in the attack, Biden said in a statement.

The attack was expected to escalate further tensions in another armed conflict in the Middle East between the U.S. and Iran.

Besides those killed, dozens were reportedly injured, with 34 personnel being monitored for possible traumatic brain injuries. The U.S. military said in a statement that at least 25 people were wounded in the attack.

“While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq,” Biden explained.

They were the first US fatalities in months of strikes against American forces across the Middle East by Iranian-backed militias amid the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

BIDEN WARNING

Biden warned Tehran and others that the US “will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner our choosing”

The attack took place in northeast Jordan, near the border with Syria. About 3,000 American troops typically are stationed in Jordan, sources familiar with the situation said.

Sunday’s attacks happened at Tower 22, a small outpost of U.S. forces who are there as part of an advise and assist mission with Jordan, U.S. sources said.

Biden added that the attack occurred Saturday night.

“We will carry on their commitment to fight terrorism. And have no doubt – we will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner of our choosing,” Biden stressed in the statement.

Since Israel’s war on Hamas in Gaza began, U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria have faced drone and missile attacks on their bases. The attack marks the first targeting of American troops in Jordan during the Israel-Hamas war.
