WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – U.S. President Joe Biden said Saturday he keeps former President Donald J. Trump in his prayers after he was nearly killed in an assassination attempt. “The stakes in this election are high. Politics must never be a killing field,” he said in a national address.

He also remembered the former fire chief who was killed at a Pennsylvania rally for Trump who spent his final moments diving down in front of his family. His brave move protected them from the gunfire that rang out Saturday during the assassination attempt against the former president.

Corey Comperatore’s quick decision to use his body as a shield against the bullets flying toward his wife and daughter rang true to the close friends and neighbors who loved and respected the proud 50-year-old Trump supporter. They noted that the Butler County resident was a “man of conviction.”

“Tonight, I am asking everyone to give hate, not a safe harbor. Nothing is more important now than standing together. American democracy where the rule of law is respected,” Biden said.

He referenced the Republican convention underway. It was his third national address to the United States.

Biden called on Americans to “stand together” and lower the political temperature in the country in the wake of the assassination attempt against Trump during a campaign rally in western Pennsylvania.

POLITICAL RHETORIC

“The political rhetoric of this country has gotten very heated,” Biden stressed during a rare address to the nation from the Oval Office on Sunday evening: “It’s time to cool it down, and we all have a responsibility to do that.”

“Disagreement is inevitable in American democracy; it’s part of human nature. Politics must never be a battlefield; God forbid a killing field,” he said.

Biden had rushed back to Washington from his Delaware beach home on Saturday night after the former U.S. president was struck by a gunshot in the ear.

Trump crouched temporarily and then stood up defiantly, pumping his fist before an enthusiastic crowd shouted, “USA! USA!” before being rushed offstage to his motorcade.

During the standoff, special forces killed the gunman, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, but Comperatore also died in the gunfire while two there were reportedly injured.

Biden said he remembered all the victims and also spoke personally with Trump.

After spending the night at his golf club in New Jersey, the still-injured Trump traveled to Wisconsin on Sunday ahead of the Republican National Convention. The gathering, which is due to take place this week, is to formally nominate him for president amid even tighter security.
