RABAT / WASHINGTON (Worthy News)– A Christian is serving 15 years in a Moroccan jail for evangelism, a Christian rights groups said, while American Christian leaders praised Morocco Thursday, June 17, for its "long history of friendship and religious cooperation."

Jamaa Ait Bakim is currently imprisoned for "proselytizing," a charge punishable under Moroccan law, said Washington based International Christian Concern (ICC), a major advocacy group closely following the case.

The Christian man is currently serving a 15 year sentence in Prison Centrale, located in the coastal city of Kenitra, Morocco, the group told Worthy News. Additionally, Morocco expelled at least about 100 Christian foreigners, including foster parents forced to leave their children behind, Western diplomats and aid agencies said, but other Christian sources say that figure is even higher.

ICC made the announcement just hours before the U.S. based National Clergy Council, representing church leaders from numerous Christian denominations held a press conference in the nation's capital to present their "positive experiences in the Kingdom of Morocco over the last six years."

"Morocco is virtually unique in the Arab-speaking world. It has consistently topped the lists of religiously tolerant Islamic countries," said National Clergy Council president, Reverend Rob Schenck. He said, "Large numbers of Christians have lived and worked in Morocco for centuries. Hundreds of Christians continue to live in Morocco today."

MOROCCO'S KING PRAISED

Schenk added that the relatively young King Mohammed VI has led "unprecedented reforms in human rights, women's rights and family law. Of the more than 40 countries I have visited, Morocco is by far one of the most friendly and hospitable."

However, according to article 220 of Moroccan Criminal law, it is illegal to “shake the faith of a Muslim.” Charges of proselytizing have led to the mass deportation Christian foreigners from Morocco over the past three months, said Counsel Roger Kiska of the U.S.-based Alliance Defense Fund.

"Christians shouldn't be targeted for deportation simply because of their beliefs," said Kiska, who was scheduled to appear before the Human Rights Commission Thursday, June 18. "None of the preconditions for lawful deportation under Moroccan law was met by the government officials in this case. "It is vital that no precedent be set that will lead to more human rights violations of this sort, where Christian volunteers can be mass expelled simply because they are Christian," he said.

Republican Congessman Frank Wolf agrees. "I call on the government of Morocco to uphold its commitment to the principles of religious tolerance and freedom, that for so long, made it a model of tolerance and modernity in the Arab world," he said on the House floor recently.

the evangelist that were expelled from morocco, were because they used their money to convince poor children to embrace the religion, which is I think immoral. Muslim countries help a lot of poor countries in Africa and worldwide, morocco (even if some kind of poor) helps many african countries to survive; those helps are not sent with preachers, or for religious purpose, they are sent to help those people. I don't say they are the example to follow but in that matter they should be taken as an example.
There are a lot of poor people in my homeland (Morocco), it's not a reason to use their poverty for religious purposes (which today is more political than religious).

Religion has been affected so much by politics, people have forgotten its first message which is to help people without expecting anything. I don't know anything about the guy that was jailed, but if he used some immoral means to expand his message in my country he deserve such a sentence, if he is not moroccan he would be expelled to his country. Christians as jews live freely in Morocco as soon as they respect the laws that are in the country, they are respected (you always have everywhere short-minded people) and Morocco has always tried its best to remain an atmosphere of tolerance and respect.

I live in Europe, I respect the european culture, I respect that minarets are forbidden in Swizerland, that burqa (which is cultural not religious) is forbidden in France and Belgium, you are free to deal however you want with whom doesn't respect your laws (there are for sure people like that) but please respect the laws that are in my country.

      Choose Respect

"Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name." Psalms 103:1

Muslim countries help other countries? Yeh right…when? where? they help no one but themselves!

  • mohand

well maybe you don't hear about all the helps that are given by morocco to countries like Guinea-Bissau, Gabon, Benin, Guinea Equatoriale, and more and more…. Morocco is leader in helps sent to other african countries, they are always there to send what they can send to help countries hitten by earthquakes like what happened in Haiti

I don't say they are the only ones to do that, but what I say is that when they send helps, there is no religious purpose behind, and that's what I dislike: to see help sent with religious and political purpose… That's what happened in Morocco, and those people were expelled since the country doesn't estimate it needs help if that's how it is given

And you should wake up, and not see muslim countries as evil
