(Worthy News) – The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has suspended nearly 500,000 federal credit cards across more than 30 agencies in a sweeping move to curb wasteful government spending, according to NewsWeek.

On Tuesday, DOGE announced on X that it had deactivated approximately 470,000 federal credit cards as part of its effort to rein in government spending.

“Credit Card Update! The program to audit unused/unneeded credit cards has been expanded to 30 agencies. After 7 weeks, ~470k cards have been de-activated. As a reminder, at the start of the audit, there were ~4.6M active cards/accounts, so still more work to do,” the post stated.

DOGE reported suspending 200,000 unnecessary credit cards across 16 federal agencies in March. The task force noted that the government currently holds 4.6 million credit cards, which accounted for $40 billion in spending last year.

Musk wrote on X Wednesday: “Twice as many credit cards are issued and active than the total number of government employees! Crazy.”
