Trump Opens G7 Summit in Canada Amid Trade Tensions, Iran-Israel Crisis

(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump arrived in Alberta, Canada, on Sunday evening to kick off the Group of Seven (G7) summit, where global economic challenges, escalating trade disputes, and the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran are set to dominate the agenda.

Air Force One touched down at Calgary International Airport at 8:36 p.m. local time, with Trump stepping off wearing an overcoat and his signature white “Make America Great Again” hat. This marks Trump’s first major international summit since the start of his second term in January.

The summit, hosted in the scenic Canadian Rockies at Kananaskis from June 15 to June 17, coincides with the 50th anniversary of the G7. Leaders from the U.S., Canada, the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the European Union will seek consensus on global economic and security priorities.

Trump will begin the summit with a bilateral meeting on June 16 with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The meeting follows months of friction over tariffs and Trump’s provocative suggestion that Canada is like the “51st state.” In May, Carney rebuffed Trump’s remarks during a White House visit, stating, “Canada won’t be for sale ever.”

Trade Tensions Take Center Stage

Trump’s trade policies will loom large over the summit. The president has imposed sweeping new tariffs, including a 25% duty on Canadian goods, 25% on cars and parts, and a doubling of tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50%. While the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement shields many products, Trump insists the measures are necessary to address trade imbalances and fentanyl trafficking concerns.

Canada has pushed back with a “Buy Canadian” campaign and remains firm on its sovereignty. Carney, who rode a wave of economic nationalism to his recent election win, aims to use the summit to promote energy security, critical mineral supply chains, and investment in infrastructure.

Iran-Israel Conflict Overshadows Talks

The G7 summit unfolds against the backdrop of escalating violence between Israel and Iran. Israel’s strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities and senior officials, launched on June 12, triggered Iranian missile attacks that breached Israeli defenses, hitting Tel Aviv. The conflict, now in its fourth day, threatens regional stability.

Trump has called for diplomacy, urging both nations to pursue a new nuclear agreement. “Iran and Israel should make a deal, and will make a deal,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, while reaffirming U.S. support for Israel’s defense.

The crisis is expected to dominate leaders’ discussions, alongside the Russia-Ukraine war and China’s growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific.

Trump is also slated to meet Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the summit. As the world watches, the Alberta gathering could set the tone for cooperation—or further division—among the world’s leading economies.
