Three Years After Dobbs, Pro-Life Movement Faces New Battles Amid Rising Abortion Numbers

(Worthy News) – As America marks the third anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision — a historic Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade and restored the people’s right to protect life through their elected officials — pro-life advocates are celebrating a legal victory while confronting sobering realities: abortions are on the rise, and the battle to defend the unborn is far from over.
According to figures released Monday by the Society of Family Planning’s pro-abortion #WeCount project, abortions surged to 1.14 million in 2024 — up from 1.05 million in 2023. The increase has been mainly fueled by the expansion of mail-order abortion pills and shield laws enacted by pro-abortion states, enabling providers to flout the will of states that have chosen to protect life.
“While we celebrate Dobbs and the end of Roe’s judicial tyranny, we grieve that abortion is still destroying innocent lives at an alarming rate,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro-Life America. “Abortion tourism, mail-order pills, and the abortion lobby’s relentless assault on state sovereignty have undermined hard-won pro-life laws.”
Since Dobbs, 23 states have enacted strong protections for unborn children, banning most abortions in the first trimester and ensuring exceptions only to save the mother’s life. Yet Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers have exploited telehealth loopholes and shield laws in states like New York and Massachusetts to ship abortion pills across state lines — defying the moral convictions of millions of Americans and the laws of nearly half the nation.
But the pro-life movement is not standing still. With Republicans now controlling the White House, Senate, and House, pro-life leaders are pushing forward what could be the most significant legislative victory since Dobbs: a budget reconciliation bill that strips Planned Parenthood of Medicaid funding for the next decade, draining an estimated $800 million annually from America’s largest abortion chain.
“This is what we’ve prayed for, worked for, and dreamed of — the chance to defund Planned Parenthood and redirect resources to real health care,” said David Bereit, executive director of the Life Leadership Conference. “With God’s help, we will seize this moment to protect women and children from the lies and destruction of the abortion industry.”
The bill, already passed by the House, is expected to reach President Trump’s desk by July 4. Pro-life groups have launched a national effort, including webcasts and prayer vigils, to rally support as the Senate prepares to vote.
The fight ahead will not be easy. Pro-life leaders acknowledge the challenge of reversing cultural trends that continue to devalue unborn life and the difficulty of reining in the unregulated distribution of abortion pills. Katie Xavios of the American Life League called the current abortion pill landscape the “wild west,” and warned that lasting change will only come when Americans once again embrace the dignity of every human life.
“As we reflect on Dobbs, we must remember: changing the law was the first step. Now we must change hearts and minds,” Xavios said. “The ultimate victory will come when abortion is not just illegal, but unthinkable.”
