NATO Summit Opens in The Hague Amid Historic Defense Pledge and Global Tensions

(Worthy News) – NATO leaders gathered in The Hague on Tuesday for a pivotal summit aimed at reshaping the alliance’s defense posture with a historic new spending pledge, even as divisions over the goal and mounting global crises threaten to overshadow the event.

At the heart of the summit is an agreement, largely driven by U.S. President Donald Trump, for all member states to increase defense spending to 5% of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2035. The target would more than double the 2% benchmark set at the Wales summit in 2014, with 3.5% designated for core military spending and 1.5% for security infrastructure.

“This summit is about NATO’s credibility,” said U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker. “We are urging all of our allies to step up and pay their fair share for transatlantic security.”

While many NATO nations — including Britain, France, Germany, and host country the Netherlands — have committed to the goal, not all are on board. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez secured an exemption for his country, calling the target “unreasonable,” while Slovakia asserted its right to chart its own path toward compliance.

“NATO has no opt-outs, and NATO doesn’t do side deals,” NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stressed at a pre-summit forum, even as he acknowledged the flexibility sovereign nations have in meeting the pledge.

The summit comes at a time of heightened tension. Just days ago, President Trump ordered strikes on three of Iran’s nuclear enrichment sites — actions aimed at eroding Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. The strikes were swiftly followed by Iranian missile attacks on a U.S. base in Qatar, and Trump’s dramatic announcement of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran.

“It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a complete and total ceasefire,” Trump declared, describing the accord as ending what he called a 12-day conflict.

While NATO’s focus in recent years has been the war in Ukraine, now in its fourth year, the Middle East conflict has drawn global attention and reshaped the summit’s agenda. Yet, Rutte insisted NATO can address both threats simultaneously.

“If we would not be able to deal with the Middle East and Ukraine at the same time, we should not be in the business of politics and military at all,” Rutte said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in The Hague for bilateral meetings, received fresh support from the Netherlands, including 100 radar systems and plans to co-produce drones. However, his nation’s NATO membership ambitions appear stalled, with Trump’s administration putting the bid on hold.

European leaders sought to reaffirm their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty. In a joint op-ed in the Financial Times, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz vowed that “Russia will find in France and Germany an unshakeable determination” to ensure Ukraine’s security.

Rutte, meanwhile, praised Trump for opening dialogue with Russia’s Vladimir Putin. “He was the only leader who could break the impasse,” Rutte said, while urging allies to stop fretting over U.S. commitment to NATO. “Start getting your investment plans going, and don’t worry about the United States.”

The summit concludes Wednesday, with leaders expected to finalize the 5% defense pledge — a move that could mark a turning point in NATO’s history or expose deeper rifts among allies as they face down threats from Moscow to Tehran.
